On May 18, 1859, a group of county notables met to create the El Dorado Agricultural Society with a board of directors, bylaws, and a constitution. That September, the first Fair was held in Coloma. Among the founding group were Thomas Robertson, an attorney from Coloma; A. A. Van Guelder, also an attorney from Coloma; A. T. Taylor, a rancher from Placerville; Henry Larken from Diamond Springs, a candidate for County Clerk; J.M.B. Weatherwax of El Dorado; O. Farnsworth of Cave Valley; B. Harkness  of Georgetown; Peter Wimmer, George Blanchard, Thomas H. Williams, and John Vanderheyden.

In the 1870s, the Agricultural Society transitioned into the 8th District Agricultural Association.

In 1883, a threat to hold the County Fair at Glenwood Park in Nevada City, where the DAA owned a premier racetrack and training facility, raised a huge uproar in El Dorado County. A citizen’s community group was formed and by 1884 a successful campaign returned the Fair to El Dorado.
